Right? Wrong! Or at least, it is very often not that simple!

The requirements that an office computer network places on a Broadband system can be very different from a domestic setup. For a start, there will normally be several people wanting to access the Internet, often at the same time. Also, delays and/or outages are normally far less acceptable in the workplace.

You may also need to use the Broadband to access your office systems remotely, via a VPN (Virtual Private Network) from remote offices or via mobile systems such as Outlook Web Access. These will mean that you require a 'Fixed IP Address'; i.e. that you have a permanent fixed address on the Internet so that other systems can contact you directly. Home services often connect with a different address each time, making dialling in very difficult.

And if you do use remote access, the speed of the Broadband is very important. Do you know that the 'down speed', often quoted as one, two or even eight Mbps, is completely different from the 'up speed'? For many standard Broadband connections, the up speed can be as low as 256Kbps. It doesn't particularly affect downloading, but if you require remote access, the server is limited to the up speed as the maximum speed for sending data to the remote user.

So even if you have an ADSLMax, 8Mbps connection, it may not be suitable for remote access to your system. Add in the possibility of VOIP (Voice over IP) telephone systems, and specifying the correct Broadband service becomes even more important.

And finally, what if it goes wrong? While there are many things which can cause problems in a Broadband connection; PCs, network, router, firewall, phone line etc, at least with a proper Business provider you can minimise the risk. Our ISP (Internet Service Provider) is locally based, with technical and admin support lines manned by people who know us, and work with us to determine the cause of a problem. Not only does that greatly speed up our repair process, but they also offer products such as Broadband Assurance, offering a guaranteed response from BT in the case of a line problem.

CSS is pleased to be associated with KeConnect Group, who offer a range of Broadband services. A basic ADSLMax connection with fixed IP address costs less than £22 + VAT per month, and a high spec business connection with enhanced up speed for less than £50 + VAT per month. Top end services such as SDSL and Fixed Line are also available if required.

Give us a call to discuss any Broadband query you may have, or complete our simple enquiry form to have us call you back. We'll be pleased to help and advise.
